Blog Post One- First Gen. Farmer

When Ben and I first started this farm and called ourselves “first generation farmers” I always kind of cringed when I said it and couldn’t figure out why. I knew we didn’t come from farming families, weren’t born on farms. Heck, I was born on the NJ coast. I got my Ag Business degree but never farmed before so, in essence we were first-gen farmers. But I think as time went on, I understood why that felt wrong. The more we farmed the more connected I felt. I realized that while no one in our immediate family farms, both of our families have farmers as ancestors (while I’m sure many of you do as well).

So, when we started raising hogs and built our homestead, I feel like the best description of us is - “Getting back to our roots”. Creating a life and lifestyle that honors our ancestors. A people that were hardworking, gritty and faithful. Because I can you, the more time I spend doing this, I realize it isn’t for the faint of heart. Farming is for the people who love hard, work hard, and don’t give up.
